I had the lucky experience or maybe some would unlucky experience of being invited over to ride the Granfondo Stelvio Santini at the start of June. It was a new event being run by the local cycling club in Bormio and being supported and sponsored by Santini SMS.
The route was to take in the Queen stage of the Giro, which the pro's had ridden the week before. Over some of the most hardest roads and finishing on top of the very famous Stelvio Pass. One of europe's highest climbs topping out at 2758 metres with 46 hairpin bends.
Needless to say no amount of training can prepare you for such an event but it did help a bit. One of the most enjoyable days I have had on the bike and the Stelvio well lets just say that it nearly broke me !!! lol. Hitting the bottom of it with 22km to the summit with already 70 miles of hard roads with a second cat climb thrown in for good measure made it a little sore on the legs.....
